Bridging Distances

HEALTHCARE IN RURAL RAJASTHAN

Partnered with

Basic Healthcare Services (BHS)

Location

Rawachh Village & Surrounding Tribal Hamlets, Udaipur District, Rajasthan
Overview

In the remote, hilly terrain of Southern Rajasthan, geography often dictates destiny. For the tribal communities living here, accessing basic healthcare means navigating long distances, high costs, and a lack of transport. To break this cycle of exclusion,we  partnered with Basic Healthcare Services (BHS) to support the AMRIT Clinic in Rawachh.

This initiative brings low-cost, high-quality, and dignified healthcare directly to the doorsteps of over 15,000 people who were previously cut off from the medical mainstream.

The Challenge: Why This Matters
While popular with tourists, Matheran is home to around 5,500 permanent residents living in scattered hamlets. The region faces distinct healthcare hurdles:

Geographical Isolation

The nearest major hospital in Udaipur is over 90 minutes away, making emergency care inaccessible for many.

Occupational Hazards

Many residents work in hazardous industries like mining, construction, and chemical production, leading to high rates of Silicosis and Tuberculosis (TB).

Maternal Health Crisis

A 2018 survey indicated that over 65% of deliveries in the region took place at home without skilled assistance, posing high risks to mothers and newborns.

The Solution: A Holistic Healthcare Ecosystem
The partnership focuses on providing access to sustained healthcare and basic nutrition and also combining primary care with community empowerment.

1. Primary & Curative Care

  • The Clinic: A fully functional primary care center in Rawachh staffed by trained nurses, supported by visiting physicians and tele-consultation networks.
  • Disease Management: Specialized treatment protocols for Tuberculosis, Silicosis, and seasonal illnesses like Malaria.

2. Maternal & Child Health (MCH)

Safe Motherhood: Regular antenatal check-ups (ANC) and high-risk pregnancy monitoring to reduce home births and maternal mortality.
"Swasthya Kirans" (Rays of Health): A network of local grassroots health workers trained to identify pregnant women, ensure immunizations, and bridge the gap between the community and the clinic.

3. Mental Health Integration

  • Recognizing the hidden burden of mental illness, the initiative integrates mental health into primary care.
  • Telepsychiatry: Patients consult with psychiatrists in Delhi via video, while local nurses manage follow-ups and medication.
  • Peer Support: Support groups for TB survivors and mental health patients to combat stigma.
Impact at a Glance (2024–2025)
The collaboration has yielded measurable success in a short period, turning the clinic into a trusted lifeline for the region.

Antenatal check-ups increased by 15% (from 264 to 303), ensuring more women receive critical care during pregnancy.

Combating Lung Disease

Treatment for Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRD) rose by 43%, and patient intake for Silicosis care doubled (from 133 to 336).

Malaria Control

Successfully managed over 350 malaria cases during the monsoon peak through rapid identification by youth volunteers.
