Zero Hunger Squad / Food

Global Volunteer Force Against Food Insecurity

Overview
The Zero Hunger Squad is a global movement undertaken by the community, dedicated to combat hunger and food waste while promoting equitable access to nutritious meals. Built on the tradition of service, compassion, and sustainability, this initiative mobilises volunteers whose purpose is to raise awareness around food wastage, and deliver meals to the underserved.
Zero Hunger Squad reflects our belief that “no resource should go to waste,” aligning with Islamic teachings on moderation and stewardship of the Earth. Through this squad, we translate faith-based values into structured, impactful social action, directly contributing to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production).

Where & How It Operates

Key Actions

  • Global Reach: The committee has been formed in every town and city across the world where members of the Dawoodi Bohra community reside. Thus, it has over hundreds of branches, including in India, the Middle East, North America, and beyond.
Key Interventions
  • Leftover food from congregations, community events, and Bohra functions is collected.
  • Cooked meals and fresh food are repackaged and distributed to individuals in need over various events, through the year.
  • Volunteers organise campaigns on food-waste awareness in community centres and mosques.
  • Educational materials, posters, and quizzes are used to encourage mindful consumption.
  • Incentives: Some committees run creative reward systems (e.g., keychains) to motivate people to finish their plates.
  • Food that cannot be used within the community is donated to food banks, homeless shelters, and NGOs.
  • This ensures zero food is wasted and reaches the vulnerable.
